IX EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES |

Saturday , September 25th, 2010 the IX EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES COMPARING LANGUAGES AND CULTURES: EUROPEAN HERITAGE Took place in Salerno (Italy) at the Province of Salerno and simultaneously at Accademia Italiana, Language and Culture Centre. This event was organized by Accademia Italiana in cooperation with the Province of Salerno and under the auspices of the European Commission (Representation in Italy).
National and International Institutions took part: European Commission, Ministry of Foreigner Affairs, Ministry of Education, University for Foreigners of Siena, European University Centre of Cultural Heritage.

| Prestigious Panelists gave an outstanding contribution to the theme of the day: Alessandra Centis and Raphael Gallus (European Commission), Massimo Vedovelli (Rector of University For Foreigners of Siena), Emilio D’Agostino (professor of University of Salerno), Salvatore La Rocca (European University Centre of Cultural Heritage). |

The Conference was opened by Senator Alfonso Andria and by the Assessor for Education of the Province of Salerno, Antonio Iannone. Remarkable was the message of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Scotti and the Head of Secretariat of Minister of Education, Pasquale Capo.

| The program was divided into 2 phases: CONFERENCE at the Province Palace and WORKSHOP at Accademia Italiana. Two videoconferences with the State University of Novosibirsk (Russia) and with the president of IALC (International Association of Language Centres) Walter Denz from Russia. |

| About 100 students of 2 lyceums in Salerno L. Da Vinci e Regina Margherita with teachers, schools directors, universities, private institutions professors took part to the Conference and the Workshop, attending seminars and classes in 8 different languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish, Rumanian, Russian. |

| A PROJECT WORK entitled “Knowing Europe through Multilingualism” was drawn up by students and the award of the best work was n. 10 scholarships offered by Accademia Italiana valid for a German Language Course (champion language). The Event ended with a special COMPETITION among students. 8 winners were awarded with n. 8 scholarships valid for Language Courses abroad: Ireland, Malta, Russia, Mexico and Costa Rica, to attend in 2011. |

The Event obtained the highest result from participants of the Conference and the Workshop. An emotional involvement of students made the event unique and reached without doubt the objective of the day, which is the approach to new languages and an increase in their intercultural awareness. At its second edition, the European day of Languages in Salerno was a great event of an educational importance which aimed to raise awareness to the issue of multilingualism in a European multi-ethnic context.
